I have started pilates recently and all this discussion about pelvic floor has got me wondering, do men have a pelvic floor? And if so, should they train it?

Dear Confused Girl,

This question is raised so often by both sexes and the answer is always met, particularly by men, with a mix of surprise and horror, as if they have been harbouring alien ‘female’ muscles all this time unbeknownst to their manly organs. How Embarrassing!

The Soma Pilates Approach to Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a time of literal growth and change. Pilates is a wonderful way for the mother-to-be to manage this change in a way that compliments her baby’s and her own body, mind and soul. There is no greater privilege than to be entrusted with the wellbeing of a pregnant client. Our staff take this responsibility very seriously, treating our pre and post natal clients with extra special care. Personally, I adore working with pregnant women, as well as new mothers and mothers in general, as I think all women need time to nurture their body and soul and I am proud to be apart of this experience. Pilates for Body and Soul March 11, 2009

Picture an average Sunday barbeque. Guests nattering about the backyard, and me standing there responding to protocol small talk such as “So, what do you do?” When asked this, I explain Soma Pilates, my business, Holistic Pilates, my profession, and the perfect balance of mind, body and soul as my passion. Despite the enquirer’s confused expression, they are always enthusiastic. Their next question is usually, “So what is Pilates then?” The dreaded question! I’ve been teaching pilates for over 8 years in various forms. Every time this is asked, I describe pilates as a system of exercises that bring balance and well-being to the body. Yet, it never truly does the method justice – you can describe pilates, but to define it would mean a different answer for each recipient! (more…)
